Foundation For Our Christian Faith

"And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth" (John 1:14).

Again I beseech you to examine your faith.  What is the foundation from which our Faith is built upon?  Getting back to the basics, sound doctrine is all important for if we do not fully understand our doctrine we will be susceptible to every whim and fancy preacher who espouse false doctrine. "That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried abut with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive" (Ephesians 4:14).  Let us consider four of the most asked questions about our Christian faith and once again be reminded our roots.  "Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints" (Jude 3).

Question #1:  How did Christ, being the Son of God, become man? "But when the fullness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law" (Galatians 4:4).
Answer:  Christ the Son of God became man, by taking to himself a true body and a reasonable soul, being conceived by the power of the Holy Ghost in the womb of the Virgin Mary, of her substance, and born of her, yet without sin.

Question #2:  Why was it requisite that the Mediator should be God?  "Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Savior Jesus Christ:  Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works" (Titus 2:13-14).
Answer:  It was requisite that the Mediator should be God, that he might sustain and keep the human nature from sinking under the infinite wrath of God, and the power of death, give worth and efficacy to his sufferings, obedience, and intercession, and to satisfy God's justice, procure his favor, purchase a peculiar people, give his Spirit to them, conquer all their enemies, and bring them to everlasting salvation.

Question #3:  Why was it requisite that the Mediator should be man?  "For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham.  Wherefore in all things it behooved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people" (Hebrews 2:16-17).
Answer:  It was requisite that the Mediator should be man, that he might advance our nature, perform obedience to the law, suffer and make intercession for us in our nature, have a fellow-feeling of our infirmities, that we might receive the adoption of sons, and have comfort and access with boldness unto the throne of grace.

Question #4:  Why was it requisite that the mediator should be God and man in one person?  "How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God" (Hebrews 9:14)?
Answer:  It was requisite that the Mediator, who was to reconcile God and man, should himself be both God and man, and this in one person, that the proper works of each nature might be accepted of God for us, and relied on by us, as the works of the whole person.

The above questions and answers were taken from the Westminster Catechism of 1648 A.D. as they too sought a way to maintain sound doctrine was delivered by the Apostles.  The questions and needs of people have not changed, those questions are our questions, those answers are our answers and foundation of our faith.  We have a sure foundation upon which our faith rests.  Come with boldness before our God and Savior, and allow the Holy Spirit to direct your ways and the inner joy of confidence will sustain you through any and all circumstances of life.

Daily Prayer:

Our Father which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Father thank you for preserving for us today and for those who will follow Your Word and the sound doctrine of our faith.  Forgive my doubts, renew my spirit for I am Yours.                          Amen
