With the recent earthquake in Haiti and so many killed, maimed, loss of property, and devastation, it is an honest question to ask, why. It is honest to ask, 'Why did God allow this to happen?" It is not a good statement to say, "God caused this." We so often want to anthropomorphize God and make Him just like us. We say, in effect, that if we were God we would not allow this to happen. Wake up call! We are not God. For God to be God He must be higher in every aspect. He cannot be limited to our thinking for our thinking ability comes from Him. Here is Christianity' pat answer, "Evil, Satan, the fall of Adam and Eve, caused all this pain and suffering." Here is the truth, "Evil, Satan, the fall of Adam and Eve, caused all this pain and suffering."
The question of 'pain and suffering" is probably the most asked question by both believers in Christ and non-believers. My answer is simple, "I don't know!" Here is what I do know, God will bring good out any situation for His purpose for His creation will come to perfect completion. In His time and in His way. We must maintain a Godly perspective, for He does know our plight. Dorothy Sayers, (1949) in her book Creed or Chaos? levels the field.
"For whatever reason God chose to make man as he is--limited and suffering and subject to sorrows and death--He had the honesty and the courage to take His own medicine. Whatever game He is playing with His creation, He has kept His own rules and played fair. He can exact nothing from man that He has not exacted from Himself. he has Himself gone through the whole of human experience, from the trivial irritations of family life and the cramping restrictions of hard work and lack of money to the worst horrors of pain and humiliation, defeat, despair and death. When He was a man, He played the man. He was born in poverty and died in disgrace and thought it well worth while" (Dorothy Sayers, Creed or Chaos? New York:: Harcourt, Brace nd Col, 1949, p.4).
Knowing that disaster can happen to us at any time should be a wake up call. How is our faith? What kind of life am I living? Remember, God always keeps His promises but all promises made by God have a condition attached to them. He is examining our hearts and asks obedience, not sacrifice, obedience. As He did to a wicked world before the flood, bringing upon that world death, yet new life through the salvation of Noah and his family. He will end this suffering world. "He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away" (Revelation 21:4).
Put your trust in God, be faithful even when you don't understand it all. Job did not fully understand and God asked Job, "Who are you to question me, did you form the world?" It is simple faith in the redemption work of Jesus Christ on the cross, and His promise to give us life eternal and one without pain. Pray for the coming of the LORD. We come to Him as children, full of trust and when we look back on our lives we can see how this God has dealt with us and how He out of His love is shaping us for eternity with Him.
Daily Prayer:
God, we trust you, our honesty is that we don't fully understand your ways, yet we trust you for your love will not allow this world to continue as it is. How can I be of assistance to those who are suffering? Lead me to where you would have me be. I am willing, I am trusting, my faith is in you. Amen
