Certain Uncertainty

"Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known..." (1 John 3:2a).

There is one thing I know for certain: my uncertainty. Maybe I am not so sure of that, for in my uncertainty I question my certainty.  Now there is a mouthful!  In my humanness I want everything to be certain.  I want 2 plus 2 to equal 4 every time.  Isn't that common sense that life should have its certainties?  I want everything to reach some end, a goal, a destination that is sure, sound, solid, certain. I even believe, wrongly though, that I would act in a certain way in a situation that might arise, even though I have never been in that situation previously.  How could I be so certain? I believe in my certainty. But, how could I suppose such a thing? How could I be so certain of a condition that has never before entered into my life?  The spiritual life is only certain of its uncertainty. It is the mark of a spiritual life; this uncertainty.  What does all this mean?

The only thing or one that I can be certain of is God. We do not know what a day will bring, it is uncertain.  I might have expectations for the day, yet in itself it is uncertain.  I am not sure what the next step will bring, it is uncertain, but, God is certain.  The point then is to abandon ourselves to the certainty of God and allow Him to direct our steps for in Him is found certainty.  This certain God, he surprises us much of the time, for what we thought was certain is not, yet we trust that He will not bring us into a situation that He is not certain of the results.  Sound confusing?  It is this: our lives are filled with uncertainty and we look for certainty in this world and find little or none.  The only certainty is God Himself!

So what I am certain of?  Is it my belief about God?  Is it some creed?  Is it my church? Am I certain about God because I am certain about my beliefs?  Or, are we abandon to all of that and find our certainty in God and in Him alone?  We come to God the Father as little children and Jesus made mention that this is how we should come to God; as children; "And he said; "I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven" (Matthew 18: 3). We are not uncertain about God, but we are uncertain as to what He will do next. If we only have faith in our beliefs about God we will get haughty, dignified, and have finality to our views.

When we are rightly related to God our lives are full of spontaneous, joyful uncertainty and expectancy.  Leave the whole thing to Him.  He will come into your lives with the glorious uncertainty and fill your life with joy, He will come!  Into any situation, He will come! Remain loyal to God, not your beliefs about Him, but to Him and Him alone.  (John 14:11). "Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the miracles themselves"  There is where we place our certainty, in our Savior Jesus and the evidence of certainty. The demonstration that we can believe in our God of certainty.  Remain loyal to Him!

Daily Prayer:

In You I place my trust Father, in You Jesus I place my faith for salvation.  I thank You for being a God that is certain, I can rely upon that certainty.  I believe and I abandon myself to You.  Your joy comes into my life and fills me in my uncertainty.  Guide me to become the witness to my world of who You are and what You have done for mankind; they need You for they too live in an uncertain world without true certainty for this world at best is uncertain; yet You are not!                                                                  Amen
