Often I am told that the Old Testament is for the Israelites only and little if any applies to Christians. It is true that many things written in the Old Testament apply only to Israel. It is the principles embedded in the narratives that are from everlasting to everlasting. In the above scripture Jehovah (LORD) makes a promise to Israel that He would watch over them; does this apply to us today? Yes, God determined that He would care for His covenanted people and we as Christians today are included as His covenanted people. "For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance--now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant" (Hebrews 9:15). "This mystery is that through the gospel the Gentiles (that is us) are heirs together with Israel, members together of one body, and sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus" (Ephesians 3:6). We are all partakers of God's promises.
God's eternal power and character cannot be seen. But from the beginning of creation, God has shown what these are like by all he has made (Romans 1:20). Many miss the majesty of God's creation. Anselm, archbishop of Cantebury; his famous argument for the existence of God: "If God could exist in our minds, he could exist in reality." It is this sure faith (Hebrews 11:1) that gives confidence God will do all that He has promised. He will grant for all who receive the atonement by the blood of Jesus Christ will inherit everlasting life with God where no pain, or suffering, or tears, or death; all wiped away (Revelation 21:4).
The mystery of God is not in what is going to be, it is now: we look for it presently, in some cataclysmic event. We look for God to manifest Himself to His children: God only manifests Himself in His Children. Other people see the manifestation, the child of God does not. If we are asking God to give us experiences, or if conscious experience is in the road, we hurt the Jesus because they are not the questions of a child.
If I believe the character of Jesus, am I living up to my belief? Am I allowing anything to perturb my heart, any morbid questions to come in? I have to get to the implicit relationship that takes everything as it comes from Him. God never guides presently, but always now. Realize that the Lord is here now and He is watching over us.
Daily Prayer:
Father Your promises are true and I have confidence in You. Forgive me though for seeking the experience instead of You. Forgive my worrying when You have promised to watch over me and I have hurt You in my times of doubt. Humbly I give my life to You and trust You for everything that You allow in my life knowing that You are Sovereign and are in control, that You are watching over me. Amen
