In that short verse Moses sums up the totality of the beginning of all that we know that exists. Simply, God Created! The Hebrew word used here "bara", a verb, (to create, to make) is of tremendous theological significance. The subject of the sentence is "God" and; therefore, Only God can "create" in the sense implied by "bara." This verb expresses creation out of nothing, "...God created the heavens and the earth" All other verbs used for creative acts have both divine and human subjects and are used in contexts where bringing something or someone into existence is not the issue.
This is a radically different doctrine of creation against the pagan myths. Pagan myths of creation involved the gods needing to overcome a powerful beast of disorder and become champion over that chaotic beast. Here God just spoke, heaven and earth now exist, they are created by just His word. God decrees and the world comes into existence and He regulates all things to His glory. Through His creative works God displays His sovereign power. The Psalmist writes: "In the beginning you laid the foundations of the earth and the heavens are the work of your hands" (Psalm 102:25). God Himself has no physical hands, so who or what are His hands? John aptly answers that question: "Through him (Jesus, the word) all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made" (John 1:3). The Wisdom of God, portrayed through Jesus, His Only Begotten Son, cries out: "The LORD brought me forth as the first of his works, before his deeds of old; I was appointed from eternity from the beginning, before the world began" (Proverbs 8: 22-23). Eternity is "time without time" there is no past, no future, only present time; therefore, Jesus, the Wisdom of God is eternal. God in three persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, existing eternally before creation. God sees all in the present, He who knows all, is all powerful, ever present is in control while allowing us to have "free will" the ability to choose.
God's purpose will not be thwarted, a purpose to have His created beings that He created in His image, Us, to communicate with and love. God has shown great love in that He came into His creation to redeem mankind, those who would choose His Son will also live in an eternity with Him. He came, He died, He rose again, taking the payment back to the Father. God created out of His love for He is Love and He has extended that Love to us and all that is required of us to receive that Love is to accept the one He sent forth, His Only Begotten Son. God does not sit back as the Deist might believe, He is active in His creation. Jesus is proof of that fact.
What a God we have, He creates and we are here with all that we need to exist, the beauty of His creation to enjoy, an ever present God who helps us in our time of need. For those who accept the sacrifice of His Son as payment for their/our sins He gives the right to inherit the Kingdom and live eternally with Him. We have such a message of hope to give to the world. Do not get caught up in the battles of this world over creation for God's word which we can with our own eyes is: "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth."
Daily Prayer:
Thank you Father for the simplicity of Your Word. Thank You for being ever present in our world and in my life. May I simply return that Love You have shown to me to You and show that Love to my world. Thank You Jesus for You by Your sacrifice have made it possible for me to live with You eternally. Amen
